Beware of Fake Revenue Emails, SMS & Calls: Don’t Get Caught Out!
Tax imposter scams are on the rise, and scammers are impersonating the Irish Revenue Commission! They’re sending bogus messages claiming refunds, urgent payments or threatening criminal action. But rest assured: Revenue will never contact you via email, SMS, or phone call about refunds or bills.
What Do These Scammers Say?
Their messages typically:
- Claim you’re owed a tax refund
- Demand you pay a bill immediately, often under threat of legal action
- Include urgent deadlines or precise amounts of money
- Encourage you to click links, taking you to fake websites.
How to Spot the Scam
- Sender’s address isn’t from an official@revenue.ie domain.
- Spelling or grammar issues - look out for sloppiness.
- Strange links that don’t go to revenue.ie.
- Unexpected requests for PPSN, bank or card details.
- Pressure tactics - urgent threats, deadlines, “respond now!” If a message tries to scare you or rush you into clicking, it’s almost certainly fraudulent.

What You Should (and Shouldn’t) Do
- Never click on links or reply to suspicious messages
- Don’t ever share PPSN, bank, or login details via email, SMS, or phone
- Revenue will only communicate through MyEnquiries on ROS or myAccount
- If you have clicked or shared details, change your Revenue password immediately & if you gave bank/card data, contact your bank right away
- Always access all Revenue services by typing www.revenue.ie into your browser, never use links from emails
Phone Call Threats: The Vishing Risk
Scammers are also making vishing calls, posing as Revenue agents requesting payments or personal data. Here’s how to protect yourself:
- Hang up immediately on unrequested calls
- Call Revenue back using a verified number via their website
- Report suspicious calls to Revenue and An Garda Síochána
